Flannel Friday Round-Up

Welcome to this week's Flannel Friday Round-Up!  We have some great submissions for you this week.

Wendy from Flannel Board Fun is showing off her 5 Chubby Snowmen.  These are perfect for winter!

Jessica from Storytime in the Stacks has brought us her Shape Monster.  I can see lots of other possibilities for this puppet/flannelboard combo, from colors to cookies!

Based on the book Walter's Wonderful Web, Jessica has shared a 2nd flannelboard this week.  The different web shapes really bring this story alive.

Jen from Adventures in Storytime was home with the flu this week and has brought us the seasonally appropriate Wash Those Germs Away.  I feel like we all will need this one!

That's a wrap for this week!  If you want to know more about Flannel Friday:

Just in time for Talk Like a Pirate Day this past week, Heather at Lady Librarian's Literacy, Lifestyle, and Lookbook Log brings us some pirates and pirate rhymes.  Ahoy matey!

Flannel Friday-Five Elephants

You know when you see a really cute flannelboard and add it to your TBD pile?  Mine never seemed to go down until we got a new assistant named Laura.  I gave her my Pinterest board, a pile of felt, and she went to town.  This is the first of my "inspired by" posts with creations by Laura.

Our original inspiration came from Five Elephants Went Out to Play by Flannel Board Fun. This is what Laura came up with.

This week's round-up is hosted by Laura at One for the Books.

Flannel Friday Round-Up

Welcome to this week's Flannel Friday round-up!

I don't know about you, but I use animal stories all the time.  Check out Wendy's Old MacDonald flannelboard set, which would work great for a story time about animals, songs, or just plain fun!

Just in time for summer, Kate shares her Five Scoops of Ice Cream.  She even added sprinkles!

Shawn will be hosting next week's round-up at Read, Rhyme and Sing

Flannel Friday-Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

This week's flannelboard is one that I created for our flannelboard that is always out in our Activity Room.  You may have seen a version of it before on my blog.  We try to come up with different ideas so kids can free play with it, but still tie it into early literacy.

For this one, I cut out a bunch of shapes that could be found on a snowman.  Every snowman that the kids create is different.  Just for fun, I added a couple of die cut snowflakes and snowmen.

We always include a sign that gives the parents some talking points.  It also gives the "why" as to why we are doing this.

This week's Flannel Friday round-up is hosted by Anne at So Tomorrow.

Flannel Friday Round-Up

It's Flannel Friday Round-Up time!

Lisa at Thrive After Three has two great apple posts this week.  She shows off her Ten Red Apples prop, along with her individual lapboards in her first post.  In her second post, she shows off her fancy 10 Apples Up on Top hat.

Kathryn at Fun with Friends at Storytime shows off her Five Friends Play Dress Up.  She has an astronaut, a pirate, a cowboy, a ninja, and Frankenstein.

Wendy at Flannel Board Fun has created Flip, Flap, Fly! so she can show off a larger version for her groups.

One Elephant Went Out to Play at Felt-tastic Flannelboard Funtime with Keith.

Kate has Five Little Speckled Frogs at Felt Board Magic.

Kate will be hosting next week's Flannel Friday Round-Up at Felt Board Magic.

See the Olympians makes an appearance by Jessica at Storytime in the Stacks.

Jane at Piper Loves the Library shows off her dots for International Dot Day.  It's pretty cool to see all that you can make out of dots!

Flannel Friday Round-Up-Summer Reading

This turned out to be more of a regular Flannel Friday round-up than dedicated to Summer Reading.  Oh well, the posts are all still great!

Check out Jessica's Five Green and Speckled Frogs that are a part of her Get Up N' Groove story time.  This whole story time would be a great one to pull out this summer.

Leslie is new to us and has brought a companion to Muncha Muncha Muncha.  The kiddos get to sort their seeds into color rows, just like planting a garden.

Katie shows off The Great Hot Air Balloon Race, which is a game that you can play in story time with a color dice.   A template is included.

In a variation of Little Mouse, Kate brings us Little Fox.  We all could use more variations of Little Mouse!

Kathryn was inspired by a previous post and brings us her version of The Green Grass Grew All Around.  The final product is spectacular!

Kate will be hosting next week's round-up at Felt Board Magic

Flannel Friday Round-Up

It's a wrap!  Check out the great ideas from the week below.

Kate from Felt Board Magic (and one of our Southern Hemisphere participants!) shows off Apple Colour Sorting.  While it would be a great addition to a fall story time, I am totally stealing this one for our felt board that we have out all the time.

Kate also shows off Five Grey Elephants Balancing Step By Step on a Piece of String.  I had never heard this song before, but it is big in Australian play schools.

I show off my easy envelope puppets here at Libraryland and how I use them in story time.  This week's version was Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Jane at Piper Loves the Library gets into the holiday spirit with her post about the Nutcracker program that they held with the Connecticut Concert Ballet.  It is precious and looks like a lot of fun!

Jen at Adventures in Storytime shares her snowflakes and the songs/rhymes that she uses them with.  Since winter starts in a week, this is a great one to add to your lineup!

Amy at One Little Librarian shares her Do You Want to Feed the Reindeer? prop.  Not only is she injecting some play into her program, but the food items have letters and numbers on them.

Shawn at Read, Rhyme and Sing has a Christmas version of Little Mouse using jingle bells and sleighs.

Wendy at Flannel Board Fun shares a bunch of variations of Little Mouse using various rhyming words. My wheels are already spinning on this one!

Mary will be hosting next week's round-up at Miss Mary Liberry

Flannel Friday Round-Up

Welcome to the Halloween edition of Flannel Friday!  We have some great Halloween/fall posts and some great general posts for your story time pleasure!

Halloween/Fall
Kathryn at Fun with Friends at Storytime is using her Crown for a Day rhyme at her Halloween program.  She shares both a flannel version and a file folder version of the rhyme!

I am always amazed at people who can play instruments in story time.  Check out Storytime Ukulele's post of Halloween songs.

Jess at From the Liberry of has created a neat version of This is NOT a Pumpkin by Bob Staake.  It has already gone on my TBM (to be made) pile and I am sure that you will feel the same!

Storytime Whoopdeedo shares their version of Fall is Not Easy by Marty Kelley.  If you haven't read this book before, definitely check it out for your fall story times.  The flannelboard version makes it even more awesome!

Lauren at The Dilley Dally shows off a great flannelboard that kids can play with.  Check out her mix and match monster station!

Other Great Stuff!
Meg at Miss Meg's Storytime shares a flannel/prop version of her vegetable rhyme.  What's really neat about it (other than the faces on the vegetables) is that there is a vegetable for every child in attendance.  It is a great way to encourage participation!

Amy at one little librarian shares her version of 5 Little Rocking Horses.  This is a great addition to a horse, nursery rhyme, or toy story time.

Melissa at Mel's Desk builds on her last post and adds Meow's friends.

That's a wrap for the week!
Melissa at Mel's Desk is hosting next week.  It is a great flannelboard, especially if you work with the toddler age group.

Are you working with colors?  Check out Storytime Katie's inspired version of paintbrushes.

Flannel Friday Round-Up

It's Flannel Friday time!  There are some great additions this week, so without further ado...

Liz from Storytime Whoopdeedo shows off her version of Book! Book! Book! by Deborah Bruss.  This story is always a hit in story time!

Who doesn't love garbage trucks?!?  Check out Kathryn's three garbage truck flannelboards at Fun with Friends at Storytime.

Danielle at Storytime with Library Danielle shows off her version of Five Strawberries.  I love how she added in animals eating the berries.  While not flannel, check out her scarf rhyme and early literacy messages here.

Mel has been hard at work on an outer space set over at Mel's Desk.  She shows off many different ways to use it with multiple age groups.  Plus, it is a great addition if you are adding STEAM to your story time lineup.

Jaime at Ms. Jaime's Library Journeys shows off her version of Lynn Reiser's Hardworking Puppies.  I love all of the career felt pieces that she created to go with the puppies.

Kathryn at Fun with Friends at Storytime is hosting next week's Flannel Friday round-up.

Flannel Friday-We're Going on a Bear Hunt

This week's submission is We're Going on a Bear Hunt, which I needed for one of our Play to Learn programs.  To make it really easily, there is a pattern at Making Learning Fun.

Flannel Friday-Lunch

This is an "inspired by" post as I have always loved Storytime Katie's version of Lunch by Denise Fleming.  When I needed to make a version for our early literacy kits, this is the one that I chose.

Since this flannelboard would circulate and get a lot of handling, I didn't glue as many small pieces as Katie did.  Instead, I used puffy paint for the details on the grapes and the watermelon.

This week's round-up is hosted by Kathryn at Fun with Friends at Storytime.

Guest Post-Palooza-The Runaway Cookies

As a part of the Flannel Friday is four celebration, I am guest hosting Jane's post below.

Attributed to The San Diego County Kindergarten Club, from the book Storytelling with the Flannel Board, by Dr. Paul Anderson, this was another of my earliest flannel stories.
The pieces are pretty basic shapes, (cookie jar with lid, gingerbread man, sugary duck, frosted rabbit, cinnamon bear, and coconut lamb), but I used fabric paint to put in the details on each of the cookies. King County Library System has the words to the version I use, see:

At the end of the story I sweep all of the cookies in my hand, and place hand to mouth, as if I devoured all the cookies. I turn to the children and ask, where do you think they went? Hm-m-m…

There is another version, see Flannel Friday, The Runaway Cookie Parade:

Guest Post-Palooza-The Owl and the Pussycat

As a part of the Flannel Friday is four celebration, I am guest hosting Jane's post below.

The Owl and the Pussycat—According to Wikipedia, “is a nonsense poem by Edward Lear, first published during 1871 as part of his book Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets. This poem I memorized in my youth so it became one of my first flannel graphs, (patterns are from The Flannel Board Storytelling Book by Judy Sierra, 2nd edition). I use an owl, cat, boat, island with tree, pig, turkey, moon, guitar, and a gold ring, as accessories. (I used a small hoop earring, with a little Velcro, for the gold ring. It makes for easy removal). There are several versions of this poem on YouTube.

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea     (place owl and cat in boat)
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,             (add guitar)
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! Too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-Tree grows     (add island with tree, remove boat)
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood     (add pig, with ring)
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."         (remove ring from pig’s nose)
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.         (add turkey, place ring on cat’s paw)
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,     (remove pig and turkey)
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,     (add moon)
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.
