For the first week, we asked kids what they wanted to do this summer. Not only is this fun for kids to do, it does use their literacy skills, and gives the library a fun picture to post on social media. The cost of the project was $5 ($1 for the board and $4 for the sticky notes).
Here is how my library is handling this issue.

First, know your community. My community likes to read things in number order. That makes the MTH renumbering a big deal. Otherwise you could have two books on the shelf with the same title and different numbers.

Second, loop in your cataloging department. Is there a staff member on board who can change the bibliographic records to reflect the new series information? This would be located in the 490 field or could be located in the 245 field under a subfield n.

Third, how are you going to separate your Magic Tree House books from your Merlin Missions books? They both look similar and are by the same author. Only the newly printed titles will have the new series and numbering information on them. For our library, we chose to keep the Magic Tree House books shelved under JFIC OSBORNE and added to the cutter for the Merlin Missions (JFIC OSBORNE/MERLIN). This will help your shelvers to be able to separate out the two series.

Finally, we are currently going through and renumbering the titles on their spines and book covers.
Mine never seemed to go down until we got a new assistant named Laura. I gave her my Pinterest board, a pile of felt, and she went to town. This is the first of my "inspired by" posts with creations by Laura.

Our original inspiration came from Five Elephants Went Out to Play by Flannel Board Fun. This is what Laura came up with.
It was suggested that people would like our advice on management. Here's my shot at starting that.

The number one piece of advice that I have for any new manager is to find your passion. For me, that is programming. You may find that you like ordering, budgeting, or strategic planing the best. My schedule, no matter how busy I get, will still have a story time added. This is what keeps me excited and gives me energy, even on the bad days. It also keeps me connected with our customers, which helps me to plan for new services.

The further that you go up the management ladder, the further away from "doing" you become. You are more of a leader and are there to encourage and mentor your staff. You find them the resources so that they can "do". You spend a lot of time working with your staff. If you can still feed your passion, it helps you get through the less fantastic parts of your job (for me, that is the schedule!).Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11701384427343511247noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1617960210316209041.post-20054246617383307952017-01-13T09:21:00.002-08:002017-01-13T09:21:23.704-08:00Flannel Friday-Do You Want to Build a Snowman? This week's flannelboard is one that I created for our flannelboard that is always out in our Activity Room. When we do these events, it is not uncommon to have 150 people at our story time. When we choose books, props, and flannelboards, we look for ones that we can make bigger so everyone can see them. This summer, we did a movement story time that included The Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka-Dot Pants by Eric Litwin. Not only is it a great story, but the figures are pretty easy to make larger. We used fun foam and puffy paint to create our figures. As one person read the story, another danced with their nut to go along with the words.
We registered 40 kids as I needed to collect and store 40 boxes.

At the program, we started with a short story time. I read A Train Goes Clickety-Clack by London and I Love Trains! by Sturges. We also did a flannelboard of Toot Toot! Then we started the crafts.

Craft 1: Make Conductor Hats
We precut conductor hats that were printed on white cardstock. The kids colored their hats and attached them to 3-inch headbands.

Craft 2: Make a Train Engine
The hardest part about this craft was collecting and storing 40 boxes. Each kid got a box. We precut other parts so the kids could grab what they needed to make wheels, the cattle catcher and the light on the front of the train. We provided 2 signs-one that listed what parts to pick up and one that showed how I put my train together.

How It Turned Out

Not only did our PR person love this program as she got to take cute pics for our web site, but the kiddos had a lot of fun. Many of them ended up pushing their train engines along the floor. It was super fun! I already have a list of people asking when we are going to do it again.

These are always great fun and we have a couple of schools that we currently do them with. As we were setting up, Julie, one of my awesome School Outreach Librarians, said that we should post this online somewhere as we have become pros at putting them together. I love them from a manager's perspective as they are inexpensive and bring whole families into the library. Here is this year's plan:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Setting Up a Lit Night
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Start early, especially if they want one in March as a part of "March is Reading Month". Our calendar does fill up quickly so we are definitely booking our literacy nights by late fall. Plus, that way we can work our schedule and our programming around the literacy night. We start by asking the principals. If you don't have a relationship with your targeted principal and get no response, try either a teacher or their PTO. For one of our schools, we host a kindergarten only literacy night. They also have 4 kindergartens at that school so we easily pull in 100+ people on those nights.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once a school is on board, they will promote the program for you. Some schools will give extra credit for attending since it is a part of "March is Reading Month". They will put it on their take-home calendars, their Facebook pages, and some will even create special flyers.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Your job is to book your space. We prefer to host them in our children's room, but at our branches, we need to hold the program mostly in the meeting rooms due to space (such as <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">in the case below). We set our program up as stations so parents can come and go during the 2-hour block, depending on when they get home from work, eat dinner, etc. There is some prep work in getting the stations ready. While our stations are mostly focused on literacy, we do throw in some STEAM.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our Stations
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As people enter the room, we set up any drawings that we have going on. Sometimes it is a "Guess How Many Legos" container, while other times they need to just write their name on a slip. This year we gave away extra summer reading books in bookbags that we had leftover.
Here are some of my favorite pictures:

Farmington Community Library
Farmington is a local library who centered their children's room around your senses. My favorite alcove is their "Hear It!" where you can try out various musical instruments.

Howell Carnegie District Library
Howell is another local-ish library. We visited them as they created a great Family Place space in a smaller space and we wanted to see how they did it. Plus, it is always great to get tips from someone who has gone through the process! My favorite part about their children's area is the tree in the story time room for the presenter!

Middle Country Public Library
I visited MCPL as a part of our Family Place training and they have an awesome outside area called a Nature Explorium. They center different areas of the garden around different themes-play, create, etc.

That's all I have for now. Keep an eye out as I will be visiting Colorado this spring and will have more pictures of library spaces.

Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11701384427343511247noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1617960210316209041.post-71438657306354434872016-01-27T15:13:00.002-08:002016-01-27T15:13:14.292-08:00Nonfiction RedoAs a manager, circulation is a big number that I have to take into account. We use it when purchasing, weeding, and making major decisions. Every year I was running our juvenile nonfiction circulation stats and they kept dropping (anywhere from 8-20% per year). Our overall circulation during the same time was not having the same drastic decreases. One year was a 3% drop, while another was a 19% increase. Things were good overall, but this section needed some attention. The hard part was that I couldn't weed it down too much as many of the books are used for school and reports. After a year of watching data, we knew that we needed to change.

Research
No big project should ever be started without some research. We looked at other big nonfiction changes around the country and talked to libraries. They were getting amazing results-some circulation was even up 20-30%!

Decisions, Decisions
After your research, you have to decide what you are going to do and how to do it. Our challenge was that we have 3 locations-a Main Library and 2 branches. Both branches interfiled their adult and juvenile nonfiction. Whatever we chose to test out had to work for both children and adults.

We decided that a modified version of BISAC was our best bet. We went mostly with the adult subject headings, but there were a couple of children's ones that we needed to add in (ex. Fairy Tales and Folklore). There were a couple of places where we combined subjects or made up headings to suit our needs (ex. Literature). We also wanted to pare down our list to just the headings that we needed. My boss originally wanted 15, but we negotiated up to 35. If we were just reclassifying children's, we could have gone with a smaller number.

The Work
Once the decisions are all made, you are set to get to work. My boss let us hire a college student who was home for the summer to do all of our relabeling. Our ILS allows us to make bulk changes so we were able to change whatever was relabeled on a given day. This took 2 months of 1 person working 10 hours a week to change a 20,000 item collection.

Once the entire section was relabeled, it was time to move the books. If I were doing it again, I would pull a bunch of people to move them over a couple of days. It took 2 of us 3 weeks to move them all. This was also the beginning of our heavy outreach season so it wasn't the best time for a shifting project.

The Final Result
Want to see what this looks like? Each section has a sign at the beginning that identifies the section. All spine labels in this section (Science) would start with SCIENCE to help with shelving. Once in a section, the call numbers are filed by Dewey number.

We always start new sections at the top of a bay of shelves to make it easier on the customers. We also added a lot of face-outs-all of the top shelves in the nonfiction section are now face-outs.

Instead of Dewey numbers on our endcaps, we now list sections.

What Do Our Customers Think?
We've now had this new organization system in place for 4 months. We are pulling our circulation stats every 3 months to monitor how it is doing over this year. After our first quarter, juvenile nonfiction is up 18% in circulation!

It is not uncommon for us to now see kids sitting in the middle of aisles with a stack of books that they are perusing. We are seeing less nonfiction location questions from kids because they are better able to find their materials between the signage and the face-outs. I will admit that the parents are less than thrilled their first time that they have to find a juvenile nonfiction book. I get a lot of "What have you done?" After I explain that we are a trial for 1 year because the kids just were not finding the materials and that now they are, they come around. It does take some librarian time showing people how to find their items in the OPAC and what they should write down to find their items on the shelf.

The above is part of a letter from one of our local teachers telling us how much she loved the new organization. It made my day!

What's Next?
We are going to keep collecting circulation statistics through mid-September before any future decisions are made. We were a test site for this project so other departments/locations are watching to see what happens.
There is so much you can do with it, from rhyming to talking about colors. This morning for story time, I made envelope puppets out of different colored sheep. If you have never made an envelope puppet before, seal the envelope and cut off the end 3 inches or so. You can make two puppets out of each envelope. For these, I used different colored die cut sheep and used double-sided tape to stick them to the envelope. While I could collect them back and reuse them, I like to send them home with the kids to retell the rhymes. They are cheap and easy to make so I don't mind losing them.

After I pass out the sheep, we say the rhyme using the different colors. For example:

Baa Baa Black Sheep, have you any wool?

Baa Baa Blue Sheep, have you any wool?

Baa Baa Red Sheep, have you any wool?

In this case, the kids who had each color held up their puppets as we told their verse.

While it woul<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">d be a great addition to a fall story time, I am totally stealing this one <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">for our felt board that we have out all the time.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Kate also shows off Five Grey Ele<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">phants Balancing Step By Step on a Piece of String. I had never heard this <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">song before, but it is big in Austr<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">alian play schools.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I show off my easy envelope puppets here at Library<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">land and how I use them in story time. This week's version was <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Baa Baa Black Sheep.
Here's some of the neat stuff that I have been doing this fall (posts to follow someday):

Our school outreach program got pushed into high gear by participating in the ConnectED Library Challenge. Our goal is to give every student in our service area a library card. Our library district hosts 47 schools in five districts, plus residents in a sixth. We brought our first (and largest) school district on in September to great success and are slowly rolling this out to the other districts. Our challenge right now is keeping up with demand and figuring out what is sustainable.

Along with that, I have done 4 presentations on our school outreach program since the beginning of October. While one was for our library board and another for our coop, our school outreach librarian (plus some others for 1) have also presented at our state library association annual conference and our state media specialist preconference. I now have a presenting break until PLA-if you're there on Thursday afternoon and are interested in school outreach, stop by our presentation.

Last week I attended Family Place training in New York. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it to everyone. My brain is currently spinning with future changes to go along with that certification.

So that's where I am at. This is on top of my manager duties, reference desk, programming, and other miscellaneous tasks that make up my day. I will be honest-I still haven't put away our Trick or Treat supplies as many days lately I drop a pile on my desk and grab another to go off again. I will be back and will have some great stuff for you all! Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11701384427343511247noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1617960210316209041.post-26983657410519591192015-10-16T06:05:00.000-07:002015-10-16T06:05:23.209-07:00Hickory Dickory Dock Guest PostThis is a guest post version of Hickory Dickory Dock for Nancy.

My teen librarian and I got together and decided to hold our first major event that required no registration. After some thought, Harry Potter Day was born. This is a great event to hold as it is multigenerational. You will have babies being wheeled in dressed in Gryffindor clothes and you will have grandparents talking about how they read this series. While it is a little intimidating to plan a program with no registration, we prepped everything for 500 people.

We started off our day with Dumbledore's Magic Show. One of our local magicians was willing to dress up in robes and pretend to be Dumbledore as he performed. At the same time, our community relations person held a potions class for adults in a different room. They made different natural cleaning products and soaps.

Of course you need a costume contest since you will have a lot of people dressed up. I was actually surprised by how much they dressed up. We split our age groups into kids and teens for prizes to make judging fair.

After the costume contest, Diagon Alley opened. We have 3 conference rooms and an auditorium and put them all to use for different "stores".

After we opened Diagon Alley, we started Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on the big screen, followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. While these weren't as heavily attended as the other events, they were still good to have on. Many families took breaks and would pop in for some of the movie. Plus, it is really hot here in July and gave people a break from the heat in our air conditioning.

During the afternoon, my teen librarian set up Quidditch on the field outside of the library. She used hula hoops attached to PVC pipe that rested in a bucket of rocks to form the goals. Arm bands identified the different teams. The kids and teens were really good about taking turns and playing together in the different positions.

Throughout the day, we had some things that anyone could do at any time. These included:

Harry Potter tattoos

Sorting Hat with Avery labels printed with different houses

Find the Harry Potter bear in the children's room

Have You Seen This Wizard? photo op

Part of the fun of the day was in the details. We made sure that we decorated and added fun things around the library. For example, a Weasley family picture sat on our fireplace. Here are some of the fun things from around the building:
Plans for Next Year
Now that we have one year under our belts, we would love to expand next year. Some of our adult librarians wanted events in their departments. We also have ideas for future activities. Our tentative plan is to pull in more staff and expand.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11701384427343511247noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1617960210316209041.post-56545824185620646532015-09-02T13:27:00.001-07:002015-09-02T13:41:37.617-07:00Diagon AlleyAs a part of our Harry Potter Day, we opened Diagon Alley for 2 hours. This was a non-registration event so anyone of any age could attend. The original plan was for volunteers to help staff the rooms and keep supplies filled, but all of our volunteers that day pulled a no-show. Luckily, all of our attendees were good sports and the adults helped to keep the stations filled.

The Leaky Cauldron
If you have Harry Potter Day, then you definitely need to serve butter beer. Our concoction was a mixture of vanilla ice cream, butterscotch syrup, and cream soda. Our local Meijer graciously donated all of our food supplies, plus cups and napkins.

Ollivander's
Every wizard needs a wand. I used Brytani's idea (who was inspired by Pop Goes the Page) and precut 500 PVC pipes for magic wands. Each wand was stuffed with unicorn hair (sparkly white yarn), dragon hearts (red pony beads), and Phoenix feathers (orange feathers). We used Duct tape to wrap our wands.

Eeylop's Owl Emporium
Trying to find owl crafts for 500 people is a little tricky, but our pom pom owls turned out cute. We used 1 1/2 inch white pom poms and glued googly eyes, an orange fun foam beak, orange fun foam feet, and white felt wings onto each owl. Tacky glue worked best for this project.

Next week we will be doing story time in the park. There is a good possibility of there being 150+ people there, which means that we began to rethink how we will be sharing picture books with a large crowd. We are pulling out puppets, props, and our newly painted Pete the Cat prop boards.

This is Pete the Cat painted on a large foam board with acrylic paints. The buttons all have velcro so we can tell the story of Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin and have the buttons pop off. Of course, you need a way to see his belly button so we made a 2nd board.
While I wanted to revamp our prizes for this summer, most of our staff didn't when we started to plan for 2015. We all know that you need staff buy-in to make a radical change. To test the waters, we offered her science activity packs as a prize option in our Winter Reading Club. After seeing how popular those were, we were ready to go.

Our science activity packs form 1/4 of our first prize for summer reading (5 hours or 20 books). This is the level where kids get to pick their own prize out of a treasure chest. The other three prizes are mustache sticky notes, superhero erasers, and superhero kick balls. The science activity packs are, by far, the most popular item in the treasure chest. So if you were on the fence about this sort of prize, you will definitely want to try it!

Activity Pack #1-Balloon Rockets
We totally "borrowed" this one from Abby. We used this as a winter reading prize and the kiddos still aren't sick of it. In fact, they are picking it again. Abby's directions and supply list are located here.

Activity Pack #2-Catapults
We used the directions from our catapult program and created packs with all of the supplies needed. We also included 1 pom pom so they had something to launch.

Activity Pack #3-Floating Ball
When looking for new ideas, we looked for things that we could easily and cheaply assemble in a plastic bag. This is a little harder than it sounds. We lucked out when we found the Floating Ball. Our baggie includes:

1 5-inch paper circle cut out of cardstock

1 straw

1 ping pong ball

With 2 pieces of scotch tape, a pair of scissors, and the instructions that we wrote up, kids can do this activity.
